Twenty-Three

Ajay and Pete stepped out of the taxi and retrieved their luggage from the boot. Jessie greeted them on the porch, "Welcome home. I have cooked. I thought you would be hungry. She stood aside and watched them haul their luggage through the main entrance. Jessie walked up to Ajay wrapping her arms around him. "I missed you," she planted a kiss on his lips. Come on. My mum will be back soon. She had to pop out for a while. You can tell us all about your trip over dinner."

Pete looked perplexed, "Did she say where she was going?"

"Sorry, Pete, if there is one thing I have learned over the years, and that is not to ask my mother questions where the business is concerned."

"I understand. Thanks, Jess."

Ajay glanced over to Pete and then took off his jacket. They sat down and waited while Jessie served up dinner. It was not long before Carla came rushing through the door, full of apologies. She walked up to Pete and planted a kiss on his cheek, "Good to see you, darling. Sorry I was not here. Had an urgent call that I needed to deal with."

Jessie glanced at her mum, "This is amazing, even if I say so myself. Let me plate some up for you."

"Thank you, Jess. You did a fine job."

"It was no trouble. I know you all like my homemade fish pie."

Pete observed Carla, who was averting his gaze. He could not help wondering where she had been. Carla's eyes darted to Pete. He raised his brow, and she rolled her eyes and turned away.

“Don’t keep us waiting, what did you find out in India?” pressed Jessie.

Ajay placed his cutlery down on his plate, “Harj confirmed our suspicions. It was hard for me to hear the words come from his mouth. Harj informed me that the explosion and the rescue was all Chandon’s idea. He played the innocent convincing Harj that we were all at fault and were ruining his life. Harj was horrified to discover the truth of Jessie’s accident. He actually cried. He too feels betrayed by Chandon. Harj agreed to go along with his plan after Chandon convinced him that no one would get hurt and the family would not suffer financially. After Chandon assured him that his father’s insurance company would meet all the costs of the explosion, he was happy to comply with Chandon’s wishes.”

Carla’s face contorted, “That still does not excuse Harj’s part in all of this. What the hell was he thinking? No one in their right mind would go along with such a plan?”

Jessie interjected, “Mum is right, Ajay. I don’t understand how Harj could have even entertained the idea, let alone participate.”

Ajay glanced at Carla and then to Jessie, “You have to understand that Harj is a very simple and uneducated man. He has been loyal all of these years to Chandon and with good reason up until now. Chandon pulled Harj and his family out of abject poverty. To his family, Chandon is God.
